Juntos los dos

Together
by José Asunción Silva, translated by Guillermo Calvo Mahé (Translation © Guillermo Calvo Mahé; Ocala, Florida, 2006; all rights reserved)

On a certain day we shared a laugh …
and ah; it so filled our ears
that all that boisterous laughter
turned to a flood of tears!

Later, together, on a certain night
our laughter so filled our ears
that a strange enchantment lingered, like
the trailing of our tears!

Amid the warm cups’ orgies
profound sighs are born
and in the briny streams of seas,
pure pallid pearls are sown!
