Spirals and Heavens and Hells, Oh My!

Spirals and Heavens and Hells, Oh My!

Democracy: originally government by the poor, soon evolved into a majoritarian concept but coupled with a very specific albeit somewhat unrelated quality, the essentiality of equality. Without it, democracy was perceived as non-functional. Equality in a limited sense, not the equality envisioned in Fahrenheit 454, but one limited to opportunity and standing before the law.

Modern society has a number of pillars, kind of like a Greek temple, but sadly, most are illusory, things that have never really existed. Among them capitalism, communism, democracy and equality. Perhaps, in different contexts, not only could each exist, but perhaps even combinations of each might coexist harmoniously; however, that what require paradigm shifts in who we as humans are, in our willingness to seek truth instead of mere echoes, and in our ability to focus on the long term good rather than concentrate on short term advantages that quickly lead us astray.

I wonder if the road to hell is really paved with good intentions. Of course, that would, as a premise, require a hell. Looking at today’s world, seemingly spiraling, not out of control but out of control with respect to common welfare, hell is much easier to believe in than is heaven.

Spirals and heavens and hells, oh my!
